So when I got here, one of my first meals was a soup called Cerviche. My familia and I sat down to eat, and I paused when I looked at the silverware. The spoon was HUGE! It was about the same size that my family used to serve vegetables and fruit. So I sat back and watched as my familia ate the soup with this enormous spoon. So naturally, I followed their example and picked up my spoon and bravely put it into this reddish pink soup concoction. I blew on the soup, and everyone chuckled. When I actually put the soup in my mouth, I realised why. It was cold! So very cold! It had a distinct flavour of onions, tomatoes, and cilantro, and when I got here, I still hated the taste of onion and tomato. Nevertheless, I chocked it down with a big smile and politely refused a second helping. Now, I have learned to like tomatoes and onions, but I still avoid eating Cerviche if I can.
My first day of school was an adventure as well. About fifth set, I had to go to the bathroom. So I walked up to the teacher and asked if I could go to the bathroom. He respond with a rather angry “go”. I still don’t understand why he was angry; I mean I waited to ask until the end of class. But this when I found out that in the bathroom at school there is no paper towel, toilet paper, or hand soap. You have to bring it if you want to use it. That was a surprise. When I came back to class, there was different teacher. When I walked in she said, “I expect you to be on time for my class.” My response was, “Sorry. Wait a second, YOU JUST SPOKE ENGLISH!” Yup, everyone in my class had a good solid laugh after that one.
It’s hard to write about all of my embarrassing experiences, because there have been so many. However, I hope that these ones just made you laugh and that it made your day just a little bit brighter. :)
