Super Bowl Sunday has always been a tradition at my house. We'd wait to watch the game until after night church, then invite the entire congregation over to watch the game. A house full of great people and even lots food has always been the custom. It's not something that I would have missed if I didn't see it, but I did get to see it.
Toady, my uncle called me and asked if I wanted to go watch the game with him and a few of his friends, and the next thing I knew, we were loading the minivan with my uncle's family, and we were off to their friend's house. As soon as we arrived, the hazing began, and I proudly took part in it. The game was fun to watch despite the fact that only half the people in the room understood the rules of American football. However, that didn't stop my shouts of excitement nor my groans of shock throughout the game. And as your typical American, I was eating my feelings the whole time. Pretzels, chips and guacamole, chicken wings. It didn't matter, if the game was intense, I was probably eating.
Watching the Super Bowl made me feel very American. And despite the fact that I was speaking Spanish, it almost felt like I was back in the States for a few hours. It was a new feeling as I felt completely at home doing something so American in such a different style. And yet, it was a greatly appreciated change from the normal. The old and the new combined in such a way that it seemed to be the most natural thing in the world. It made for an incredible day filled with good food, great people, and one mind-blowing game.
And who knew that the Super Bowl could be so good with out all those funny commercials?
