So ever since I got here, people watching has become one of my favourite pastimes. And let me tell you, people watching at an exchange student conference is almost as fun as people watching at a buffet. This past week, I went to Manabí with about 200 other exchange students, and I learned so much about people. I got to spend five days observing as people complained, complimented, and enjoyed what went on around them. Exchange students are a breed of their own, of this I can assure you. We are all crazy in our unique way. And it is absolutely terrific!
Some students just do whatever comes to their mind, be it stacking three mattresses on one bed or dancing in front of everyone with your fag wrapped around your waist. ome of us, the concept of “self embarrassment” is totally foreign. And others are just too aware of it.The pin exchange is where the crazy came out. A French exchange student wore a barré with the Rotary logo on it, a T-shirt, and his French flag as his skirt. He must have given out a hundred Eiffel Tower keychains. I got one for my blazer! Another student would just go around stealing handfuls of pins from people and passing them out. He was from Germany, but he gave out pins from Venezuela, USA, Taiwan, German, and Ecuador. He was fun to talk to.
However, one thing that was pushed once again into the forefront of my mind is the fact that I am a part of the best exchange program in the world. Rotary Youth Exchange. In between every meal, Rotary provided a snack consisting of a juice box, fruit, chips, and a sandwich. Yeah, it was a “snack”. But the Rotarians always made sure that there was more than enough for us students, and then after we have had our second and third helpings, they would eat. They made sure every last detail was taken care of. It is because of their hard work that the trip was as incredible as it was.I cannot say thank you enough to the Rotarians that organised the trip. It was amazing!
