It's incredible how quickly exchanges students bond. This trip I got to know friends from Canada and Denmark really well. Despite the fact that I had only known really them for 9 days, leaving them felt like leaving my best friends. We gathered memories ranging from the monument of the Middle of the World to long nights at the hotel. Secrets just disappeared between us, and trust grew at a surprising rate. I also got to know the girls from Brazil as well. It took us an hour to become good friends and by the end of the night we were practically inseparable. They are the reason this post is also in Spanish, because I want them to know how much they mean to me. If I had known them in the States, I'm not sure I would have been brave enough to make friends with them, but I'm so happy I did this trip. Despite the fact that many times it was 4 Brazilians and an American, they included me and mostly spoke Spanish when I was around. We were like sisters teasing each other about everything from boys to our blazers.
But time was running out, and all good things must come to an end. Saying good bye to them was one of the hardest things I have had to do in my life. When I left my family and friends, I said good bye knowing that I would come back and see them again. This time, I had no such assurance. And as our tears flowed like the waterfalls we had seen just a few days before, we knew that we wouldn't lose contact. We would fight the distance and stay in touch. How could we not? We are family now.
So are we really the crazy youngsters? Absolutely! I mean who else would trust someone they just met 4 days ago with their deepest darkest secrets, or have the guts to tease a complete stranger about he love of their life? Yes, we are the crazy ones. And we are proud of it.
Together forever, though miles apart.
Maybe in distance, but never in heart.
