Well, now I can officially say that I have conquered the Amazon. I have fished for piranhas; I have survived the bugs, and I have swung from a vine like Tarzan. But the thing that surprised me the most was that it was green. Obviously, I knew it would be green before I went there, but it was only green. There were hardly any flowers, and everything was green. But a beautiful green.
We were all put into groups of about 6, and my group consisted of 3 Germans, a Canadian, 2 Americans, and an Ecuadorian guide. We got up before dawn every day to go on an adventure. Our first morning, our guide took us on a canoe ride and then a mini-hike to a wooden tower built around a tree that stands 260 feet (80 meters) tall. Climbing this massive tower, we quickly discovered who was afraid of heights. Once we reached the top, the view was breathtaking, and the adrenaline was pounding in everyone's head. We were higher than every other tree in the Amazon. A once in a lifetime experience. Another day, we hiked for an hour to another tower that stood 325 feet (100 meters) in the air, however this tower was one of three. All built only 30 meters (100 feet) way from each other. So once reaching the top of the first tower, we walked across the bridge to reach the next one. Now this bridge looks like the bridges from the movies, the ones made from wood and rope. When you are in between two towers, you feel the bridge sway and your heart in your throat. I also did a hodgepodge of other thing such as swimming with piranhas, crocodile "hunts", watching the sun rise, and almost winning in a game of town vs the world soccer game.
Although I was not there for a long time, I still had a week full of unforgettable memories, indescribable feelings, and once in a lifetime experiences. That maybe the only time I ever go to the Amazon, but I can sleep peacefully at night knowing that I conquered the Amazon.
